DJI Matrice 4 vs Matrice 5: What’s Changed and Which One Fits Your Operation?

Compare Matrice 5TD with the Matrice 4 series for Canadian operations: thermal imaging, zoom, aircraft temperature ratings, automated mapping and pilot-flown field work.

DJI has launched the Matrice 5TD, the first aircraft in its Matrice 5 generation. It’s built exclusively for the new DJI Dock 4 and brings major upgrades in thermal imaging, zoom, range, AI and cold-weather performance.

The Matrice 4 series is still very much in the picture. It covers pilot-flown models for field crews and dock models for automated operations, including a dedicated mapping drone that the Matrice 5 lineup doesn’t yet have.

This guide compares the Matrice 4 series and the Matrice 5TD so you can decide which fits your operation in Canada.

The short answer

  • Choose the Matrice 5TD for 24/7 automated operations that need the best thermal imaging, longest zoom and range, more advanced AI and operation down to –40°C.
  • Choose the Matrice 4D for automated, survey-grade mapping from a dock.
  • Choose the Matrice 4TD for automated thermal and security work where a lighter Dock 3 installation or vehicle mounting makes more sense.
  • Choose the Matrice 4E or 4T when your crews fly in the field with a controller.

The Matrice 5TD is designed for docked, remote operations. It supports the DJI RC Plus 2 only as an emergency controller, with basic flight and live video. It isn’t a replacement for the pilot-flown Matrice 4E or 4T.

Matrice 5TD vs Matrice 4TD: head-to-head

The Matrice 4TD is the most direct comparison, since both are thermal dock drones.

What the Matrice 5 improves

1. Thermal imaging

The Matrice 5TD’s native 1280×1024 thermal sensor doubles the Matrice 4TD’s native resolution. Its ultra-high-resolution mode reaches 2560×2048. It also adds:

Sensitivity of 50 mK or better, for picking up smaller temperature differences

Two measurement ranges: –40°C to 150°C in high gain, and 0°C to 550°C in low gain

Visible and thermal image fusion

Spot and area temperature measurement and temperature alerts

Sun burn protection for the thermal sensor

Up to 32× thermal digital zoom

Why it matters: you can see smaller hot spots from further away. That covers electrical connections, substation components, flare stacks, pipelines, conveyor idlers and people or vehicles at night.

2. Zoom and detail

Wide camera: a 1/0.98", 50 MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture for better detail and low-light performance

Tele camera: a 252 mm equivalent lens, up from 168 mm, with up to 176× hybrid zoom

Night Scene Mode: ISO up to 1,638,400 for colour imaging in very low light

Lens defogging: on all three visible cameras

Why it matters: you can read gauges, inspect insulators, check bolts and identify vehicles from a safer distance.

3. Range and measurement

Laser rangefinder: up to 3 km, compared with 1.8 km

Video transmission: up to 40 km under Canada’s IC standard

Max flight distance: 53 km

Multi-dock missions: the drone can take off from one Dock 4 and land at another up to 15 km away

4. Smarter AI

Onboard AI expands from three categories to 17 target types. These include:

People and vehicles, with colour filtering

Smoke and fire

Livestock

Trucks, buses, forklifts and excavators

River debris

Combined with DJI FlightHub 2’s AI route generation and change detection, this makes automated monitoring much more useful for security, public safety, construction and industrial sites.

5. Cold-weather performance

The Matrice 5TD operates from –40°C to 50°C, compared with –20°C to 50°C for the Matrice 4TD. Its battery also heats itself in low temperatures. This is one of the most important upgrades for Canadian operators.

6. Endurance

Flight time goes up to 59 minutes, and hover time to 55 minutes, compared with 54 and 47 minutes on the Matrice 4D and 4TD. Longer hover time matters for overwatch, security incidents and live inspections.

7. Built-in obstacle sensing

On the Matrice 4D series, the LiDAR and radar obstacle sensing comes as a separate module. On the Matrice 5TD, it’s built in. The system includes:

Omnidirectional vision sensing

Rotating LiDAR with up to 110 m range

Millimetre-wave radar that can detect a 12 mm cable up to 40 m ahead

A downward 3D infrared sensor for precise landings

8. Connectivity

Dual built-in 4G modules give the drone a backup link alongside its main transmission system. That’s useful at remote sites and in areas with obstructed signals.

9. Upgraded accessories

AS2D speaker: 120.5 dB with a 400 m broadcast range

AL2D light: a 40 W spotlight and an 18 W floodlight in one unit

AP1 parachute: DJI’s own parachute, mounted on top

Where the Matrice 4 series still wins

Survey-grade mapping

The Matrice 4E (pilot-flown) and Matrice 4D (docked) both have a 4/3", 20 MP wide camera with a mechanical shutter. It’s built for survey-grade photogrammetry without ground control points. These are still the right drones for:

Stockpile volumetrics

Construction progress and earthworks

Orthomosaics and 3D models

Mine planning and site surveys

The Matrice 5 generation doesn’t have a dedicated mapping model yet.

Pilot-flown field operations

The Matrice 4E and 4T are compact, portable drones that crews fly with a controller. They suit:

Search and rescue

Police and fire response

Field inspections

Survey crews moving between sites

The Matrice 5TD is designed for dock-based operations only.

Lighter, more flexible deployment

The Matrice 4D and 4TD run on DJI Dock 3. Compared with Dock 4, Dock 3:

Weighs 55 kg instead of 66 kg

Draws up to 800 W instead of 2,000 W

Connects to the network directly, without a separate ground station

Supports vehicle-mounted deployment

Lower weight and cost of entry

The Matrice 4 series is lighter and has been on the market longer. That means more established workflows, accessories and support.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DJI Matrice 5TD?

It’s DJI’s first Matrice 5 generation aircraft, built for automated operations from DJI Dock 4. It features a 1280×1024 thermal camera, a 252 mm tele camera, a 3 km laser rangefinder and 59 minutes of flight time.

Is there a pilot-flown Matrice 5?

Not at launch. The Matrice 5TD is designed for Dock 4 and supports the DJI RC Plus 2 only as an emergency controller.

Does the Matrice 5TD replace the Matrice 4TD?

For high-demand thermal and security operations, it’s a major upgrade. The Matrice 4TD on Dock 3 is still a strong choice where a lighter installation, lower power draw or vehicle mounting matters.

Which is better for mapping, Matrice 4 or Matrice 5?

The Matrice 4E and 4D. Their mechanical-shutter 4/3" camera is built for survey-grade mapping.

How much better is the Matrice 5TD thermal camera?

It has a native 1280×1024 sensor, double the Matrice 4TD’s 640×512, with an ultra-high-resolution mode of 2560×2048 and sensitivity of 50 mK or better.

Which handles Canadian winters better?

The Matrice 5TD, rated to –40°C. The Matrice 4D and 4TD are rated to –20°C, and the pilot-flown Matrice 4E and 4T to –10°C.

Can the Matrice 5TD fly from Dock 3?

No. The Matrice 5TD works with DJI Dock 4, and the Matrice 4D and 4TD work with DJI Dock 3.
