Drone-Based Magnetometers for Geophysical Surveys, UXO Detection & Subsurface Mapping

Unlock a new dimension of subsurface insight. Our drone-mounted magnetometer systems deliver high-precision aerial magnetic surveys — ideal for mineral exploration, buried utilities detection, environmental assessment, archaeological surveys, UXO and landfill scanning, and infrastructure inspection. With survey speeds of tens of hectares per day and unmatched access to challenging terrain, these systems redefine subsurface mapping.

What Is a Magnetometer?

A magnetometer is a sensor that measures the magnetic field at a given point. On Earth, magnetic flux naturally exists and objects containing ferrous (iron-containing) materials create magnetic anomalies. By measuring both the strength (flux density) and the direction of the field (in vector magnetometers), we can detect underground ferrous objects — from iron ore deposits to buried metal pipes, tanks, unexploded ordnance (UXO), and other metallic infrastructure.

Why Use Drone-Mounted Magnetometer Systems?

  • Safe, non-intrusive subsurface scanning — survey areas where ground access is hazardous or impractical.
  • High productivity — cover tens of hectares per day, far faster than terrestrial methods.
  • High-resolution magnetic data — detect anomalies caused by ferrous materials, ideal for archaeology, utilities, UXO, and geology.
  • Flexible deployment — from open fields to uneven terrain, forests, and remote sites.
  • Reduced manpower and risk — minimal physical labor and no need for personnel to enter hazardous areas.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) sensors FAQ

A Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) payload emits radio waves into the ground to detect subsurface objects, layers, and voids. Mounted beneath a drone like the DJI M400, it collects subsurface data remotely and safely over terrain that’s hard or dangerous to access on foot.

SPH Engineering offers several UAV-integrated options:

  • Zond Aero 1000: high-frequency, shallow surveys.
  • Zond Aero 500 NG: mid-range general-purpose GPR.
  • Cobra Plug-In GPR: configurable, research-grade deep survey tool.

It’s possible, but effectiveness reduces as sensor-ground clearance increases and interference/vegetation blocks the signal. Survey design must account for terrain and vegetation.

  • Payload-only systems start around $22 000 – $27 000 CAD.
  • Fully integrated bundles with drone, software, mounts, and training range $30 000 – $60 000 CAD+.
  • Remote Robotic provides detailed quotes based on your drone platform and mission profile.

All SPH Engineering GPR payloads integrate with DJI M300, M350, M400 and other professional multirotors that can hover stably at low altitude with at least 2–3 kg payload capacity.

Penetration varies with frequency and conditions. For example: a 1000 MHz system might reach 0.5-1 m; a 100 MHz system might reach 15-20 m in “average soil”.

As an Authorized Canadian Dealer for SPH Engineering, Remote Robotic provides official manufacturer warranty, integration assistance, onboarding, and optional on-site or remote training.
