Engineering Co-op

AirMetal (Remote Robotic Subsidiary) is a Canadian advanced manufacturing company building secure, domestic production capability for military-grade drones and battery systems in support of the Canadian Armed Forces and allied programs. Based in Ottawa, we are scaling from early production through sustained manufacturing across multiple drone platforms.

The Role

We are looking for an Engineering Co-op Student to join AirMetal Robotics for a 4, 8, or 12-month work term. You will work alongside our engineering team on real projects that span software development, systems integration, and hardware bring-up.

This is a hands-on role with genuine responsibility — the work you do will directly contribute to products used in the field.

This position is well-suited for students who are eager to work across disciplines, comfortable navigating ambiguity, and motivated by the opportunity to see their contributions move from prototype to deployment.

Key Functions

  • Software development across embedded and application layers
  • Systems integration and testing
  • Hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation
  • Technical documentation and design reviews
  • Scripting and tooling to support engineering workflows

What You Will Do

  • Develop, test, and debug software in languages such as Python, C, and C++
  • Contribute to the integration and testing of hardware and software systems
  • Write scripts and automation tools to improve internal engineering processes
  • Use Git for version control and collaborate through code reviews
  • Document your work clearly — including design decisions, test results, and procedures
  • Participate in team stand-ups, design discussions, and technical reviews
  • Work closely with se

The Ideal Candidate

  • Is currently enrolled in an engineering program (Electrical, Computer, Software,
  • Mechatronics, Systems, or a related discipline) at a Canadian university or college
  • Has a foundational understanding of at least one programming language such as Python, C, or C++
  • Is comfortable working in a Linux environment and using command-line tools
  • Has experience with Git and collaborative development workflows
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn new concepts quickly
  • Communicates effectively — both in writing and verbally
  • Works independently, takes ownership of tasks, and asks good questions when needed

Nice to Haves

  • Experience with embedded systems or microcontrollers
  • Familiarity with networking concepts (TCP/IP, serial communication protocols)
  • Exposure to robotics frameworks or autonomous systems
  • Experience with CAD tools or PCB design
  • Understanding of electronics principles (reading schematics, using test equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters)
  • Understanding of circuit design and analysis
  • Previous co-op or internship experience in an engineering environment

What We Offer

  • A paid co-op position with meaningful, hands-on engineering work
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers working on cutting-edge drone technology
  • Exposure to the full product lifecycle — from design through manufacturing and deployment
  • A fast-paced, collaborative environment where your contributions have real impact
  • Potential for future co-op terms or full-time employment based on performance

Location

This role is full-time, in-person at our facility in Kanata, Ontario.
