Why use Drone-Mounted Magnetometer Systems?

Efficient Aerial Magnetic Surveys

Cover large or hard-to-reach areas quickly with high-resolution magnetic data—reducing field time, labour, and safety risks compared to traditional ground methods.

High-Precision Detection

Detect subtle magnetic anomalies caused by buried ferrous materials, pipelines, UXO, or mineral deposits with centimeter-accurate positioning and stable flight integration.

Turnkey Drone Integration

Designed for seamless use with enterprise multirotor UAVs (like DJI M400/M350/M300) through SPH Engineering’s SkyHub and UgCS software—ensuring smooth mission planning, data logging, and post-processing.

Drone-Mounted Magnetometer Systems comparison

Model MagNIMBUS (SPH Engineering) MagDrone R3 (SENSYS via SPH portfolio) MagArrow (Geometrics)
Sensor Technology & Key Specs Atomic total-field sensor (QuSpin Gen-2), ultra-low sensor-to-ground clearance possible (mere dozens of centimetres). Dual triaxial fluxgate sensors, sampling 200 Hz, extremely lightweight (~750 g) for UAVs ≥1 kg payload. Self-contained total-field cesium-vapor magnetometer, 1.2 kg weight, 1000 Hz sample rate.
Ideal Use-Case High-sensitivity surveys: UXO detection, archaeological mapping, mineral exploration with fine detail. Mid-tier surveys: buried infrastructure, utilities, moderate UXO/metal detection where extreme resolution not required. Utility/long-line surveys: broad area coverage, larger drones, less need for ultra-low clearance.

Drone-Mounted Magnetometer Systems FAQ

The term “range” in magnetometry is misleading—what matters is sensor-ground clearance, target ferrous mass, and magnetometer sensitivity. A magnetometer doesn’t have a simple “depth range.”

Generally no. Magnetometers detect ferrous (iron-containing) materials via magnetic anomalies. Non-ferrous or non-magnetic objects may not produce a detectable anomaly.

It’s possible, but effectiveness reduces as sensor-ground clearance increases and interference/vegetation blocks the signal. Survey design must account for terrain and vegetation.

SPH lists DJI M300, M350, M400, M600; Inspired Flight IF1200A/IF800; Harris Aerial H6; Wispr Ranger Pro, and other professional multirotors.

Pricing depends on the sensor type and integration level:

  • Entry-level fluxgate systems (e.g., MagDrone R3) start around $20 000–$25 000 CAD.
  • High-end atomic or total-field magnetometers (e.g., MagNIMBUS) typically range $30 000–$50 000 CAD+.
  • Turnkey bundles with the drone, mounting kit, and software generally add 30–50% to the base payload cost.
